A crisis erupted in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod during the synod leadership of Dr. Jacob A.O. Preus (1969-80). Preus initiated an investigation of the faculty of Concordia Seminary in order to purge the school of liberal-minded faculty whose approach to biblical interpretation was based upon modern historical criticism rather than on inerrancy.
